Department of Ethnic and Cultural Pastoral Services

The 14 ethnic pastoral centers are the Diocese of Oakland’s attempt to pastorally care for the major ethnic groups in the community. These centers are individual offices/staff that provide for the cultural expressions of specific immigrant groups and promote liturgical sensitivity to language and culture. This outreach has been available to the African-American and Hispanic communities since the founding of the diocese; now it has been expanded to address the needs of other ethnic communities as well.

The ethnic pastoral centers’ main office provides services primarily to ethnic center directors and other Diocesan offices whose work requires cultural sensitivity. Another objective at present is an attempt to get the individual ethnic centers coordinated into the deanery set-up of the Diocese.

Some of the major accomplishments of the Department of Ethnic and Cultural Pastoral Services include the coordination of monthly meetings/gatherings of ethnic center directors, the on-going formation of lay-leaders, and the sponsoring of the annual "Chautauqua" event, a multicultural festival celebrating the diverse peoples of this area.
