Bishop Barber announces new superintendent for diocesan schools

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 18, 2017

OAKLAND – Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, has appointed an East Bay native, Kathleen M. Radecke, as the new superintendent of schools for the Diocese of Oakland. The appointment is effective July 1, 2017.

Radecke holds a master’s in education from the University of San Francisco in Catholic School Administration. She also holds a bachelor's degree in Speech Communication and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from California State University in Hayward, and a Master Catechist Certificate from the Oakland Diocese.

She served as superintendent of the Diocese of Monterey’s Catholic schools, across four counties with a student population of approximately 5,000, from 2011-2016. Most recently she has worked as the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA) Elementary and Secondary Commissioner and director of the New Principal Mentor Program for the Diocese of Monterey.

“Ms. Radecke’s professional expertise and commitment to Catholic education will allow our diocesan school system to flourish,” Bishop Barber said. “Her experience in improving teacher effectiveness, stabilizing and growing enrollments and opening Catholic schools to underserved communities will serve us well.”

“I believe serving in Catholic education is a ministry in which there is no greater blessing than to have a positive impact on the spiritual and educational formation of a student,” Ms. Radecke said. “I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to serve as the next superintendent of Catholic Schools and to return to the Diocese of Oakland, where I was born and raised, formed in the faith and my vocation as a Catholic school educator.”

The Diocese of Oakland serves two counties in the East Bay region, Alameda and Contra Costa, and has nine high schools and 44 elementary and middle schools.
