To Make Up an Absence

If you are unable to attend this class, please submit to the instructor at the next class written responses to two questions from each chapter and one from among the handouts (for a total of five) from below. Each response should be 2-3 paragraphs in length and address the question completely. Include the question at the top of your response.

Chapter 9: Receive the Holy Spirit

  1. Why do we call the third Person of the Trinity the "Holy Spirit"? (see CCC, no. 691) Why do we refer to the Holy Spirit as "he" and never "it"?
  2. "When the Father sends his Word, he always sends his Breath" (CCC, no. 689). Explain the meaning of this statement, and give as evidence at least two passages from Scripture.
  3. Describe how the Holy Spirit is revealed and how this method of revelation demonstrates God's own teaching method (see CCC 684, 687). What are some implications of the character of divine pedagogy for your own teaching method?
  4. Choose two symbols of the Holy Spirit mentioned in the Catechism (p. 107, CCC nos. 696-701). Citing at least two specific passages, briefly describe how each symbol appears in the Old and New Testaments. Compare and contrast the two images of the Holy Spirit. What qualities of the Holy Spirit does each express?

Chapter 13. Our Eternal Destiny

  1. Why is the resurrection of our bodies important? In speaking of heaven or hell, why do we explain them in terms of our relationship with God?
  2. Describe the particular judgment and the general judgment, referring to at least one passage from Scripture for each.
  3. Why is burial of the dead a corporal work of mercy? Describe and explain the Church's preferences for the treatment of the body of the deceased.
  4. Why do we pray for the dying? Why do we pray for the dead? Cite at least one passage from Scripture in your response.

Handouts

  • True God and True Man
Choose a modern-day religious group (such as Mormons, Jehovah's witnesses, Christian Scientists, Unitarians, etc.) that teaches a form of one of the heretical doctrines described. How specifically does that group's doctrine contradict Church teaching? How do you explain the revival of many ancient heresies today?
  • The Paschal Mystery
How does the Paschal mystery reveal the tragedy of sin, God the Father's love for us, and Christ's obedience to his Father? How is each of these a mystery?
  • Did Jesus Always Know He was God?
Answer this question, using at least one passage from Scripture in your response. How is the mystery of the Incarnation at the heart of this question?
