To Make Up an Absence

If you are unable to attend this class, please submit to the instructor at the next class written responses to two questions from each chapter (for a total of four) from below. Each response should be 2-3 paragraphs in length and address the question completely. Include the question at the top of your response.

Chapter 10: The Church: Reflecting the Light of Christ

  1. List the different meanings of the word "Church" (see also p. 130). What is the primary meaning of "Church" in this chapter? Be specific. Does the multiplicity of uses of the word have the potential to confuse? Explain.
  2. How was the Church prefigured in the people of Israel? Cite specific examples.
  3. How is the Church both visible and invisible (spiritual)? Discuss some errors that arise from denying either the visible or invisible reality of the Church.
  4. How does the description of the Church as the body of Christ (see 1 Cor. 12:12ff) illustrate both her unity and her need for various organizational structures?

Chapter 11: The Four Marks of the Church

  1. In what ways is Bl. Junípero Serra an appropriate patron of this catechetical institute? How did he exemplify two of the four marks of the Church?
  2. How can the four marks of the Church be used to identify Christ's Church? Why might the four marks be accepted as a dependable means of identification?
  3. How is the institution of the papacy integral to the oneness of the Church? Cite historical examples.
  4. What do we mean when we call the Church "catholic"? How are not all Catholics "Roman Catholics"? How does the Church's catholicism give her a relationship with all people?
  5. How is the Church holy? Include a reference to Scripture in your answer. Do the sins of her members diminish the Church's holiness?
  6. Describe three specific ways that the pope and the bishops exercise the Church's charism of infallibility (p. 133-134). Can you cite examples of each?
