If you are unable to attend this class, please submit to the instructor at
the next class written responses to four of the questions below (at least one
from each section). Each response should be 2-3 paragraphs in
length and address the question completely. Include the question (not just the number) at the top
of your response.
Chapter 30. The Sixth Commandment: Marital Fidelity
- What is chastity, and how does its living out differ according to one's state in life?
How is chastity related to human freedom?
Choose four examples of sins against chastity from p. 406-407 and explain how the virtue of chastity
counters them.
- Why are both artificial contraception in marriage and in vitro fertilization morally wrong?
What is natural family planning, and how does it respect the bond between the unitive and procreative
aspects of marriage?
- What is the nuptial meaning of the body? How does this understanding of the body combat the
exploitation of sexuality for commercial gain and other violations of chastity and marital fidelity
in American culture?
Chapter 33. The Ninth Commandment: Practice Purity of Heart
- What is modesty? How does the virtue of modesty protect and foster true human freedom?
- Why is it important to be as vigilant about our interior attitudes toward sexuality as we are about external acts? Cite other examples of links between inner attitudes and external behavior.
Handouts
- Marriage, Sexuality and Contraception
Recall the definition of sacrament. How is human sexuality,
properly expressed, sacramental? How is contraception destructive of
human dignity? Describe natural family planning and how it is very
different from contraception.
- Chastity and Modesty
What is chastity, and how does its living out differ according to one's state in life?
What is modesty? Give examples. How do these virtues express
the great value Christians have for the body as well as our responsibility to
our neighbor not to lead him or her into sin?
[NOTE: Do not choose both this question and question 1 from
Chapter 33.]
