Holy Land:   We pray for an end to the violence in Palestine which threatens so many innocent civilians. Below is an account from Najwa, a friend of CRS Gaza staff, on the aerial bombings in Gaza, 21 May 2007

I always wonder about the capacity of humans to endure traumatic events: some people say when you are used to a certain situation your reactions to this situation will stay the same. However, for me they are not the same-- and they won’t be the same. I am so exhausted, physically, mentally and spiritually that I am afraid my body as well as my heart won’t take it anymore. After an awful night with the sound of the apaches and its missiles I realized that I can’t take it anymore. I am a human being who only seeks to have the minimum: a normal life for my kids and myself. Yesterday Nusairat camp was the scene for the Israeli apaches. Three missiles hit after midnight in the area where I live. I was asking my self which is more painful: to hear the hissing of the missile before it hits its target or your doubts about where it is going to hit, whether you are the target, your family, your neighbor or your house.

I had very difficult moments, I felt that my heart will stop beating. I was torn between going to check on my two boys, or trying to protect my eight month old baby, or hiding in the arms of my husband in a way to comfort my self. My husband tried his best to comfort me, saying that I have to get used to this situation, and that it is not new to us as Palestinians. But for God’s sake I can’t, I can’t act and live with frequent doubts of when my turn will be, I can’t live with visions every time I try to close my eyes to get some sleep: Visions of my kids killed, or my house destroyed. I know that I have to believe in Allah, and to believe that I will experience every thing that Allah chooses for me, but I am also a human being, who can only take so much. I can’t live in this way; the stressful life I lived drained me as a mother, and as a normal person. I either have no room kept for my children to deal with them normally, nor for any normal feeling of stability in my life.

I wonder if the Israelis know that.
