Welcome to the CYO Coaches' Workshops Page!

CYO Coaches' Certification Program

All CYO Coaches must be certified to coach prior to each sports season.  This page contains certification requirements, safe environment requirements and current information on CYO Coaches' Certification Workshops.

2013 – 2014 CYO Coaches' Certification

Coaches' Certification Workshops - Workshops to certify coaches will be held prior to the beginning of each sport season. Coaches who attend a Coaches' Certification Workshop, and who meet program requirements, will be certified to coach in that sport for that school year.

Attendance at a Workshop during that school year and prior to that sport season is mandatory for all coaches and assistant coaches. Coaches must attend the entire workshop to be certified. (If the coaches do not attend, that school/parish cannot field teams for that sport.)

Announcements of dates, times, and locations of workshops will be available to the athletic directors and posted on this web page prior to each sport season.

Workshops will include CYO philosophy, rules, and safety procedures..

Safe Environment Training - It is required that each coach complete diocesan safe environment training prior to certifiction. See the Diocesan Safe Environment Training section below for details.

Certification Cards - Certification cards are presented to coaches who complete program requirements at the end of the workshop. All coaches should carry their certification cards with them to all the games and be prepared to present them when requested. Failure to present a card within 48 hours will result in a forfeit for the team. Any person on the bench or in the dugout (excluding team members and scorekeepers) must have a valid certification card.

Additional Certification Requriements - The certified coaches of the team must be high school age or older. To be selected, coaches must complete the screening process and be selected and approved to coach by their parish or Catholic school prior to certification. Coaches are screened following Coaches Workshops under the provisions of "Megan's Law" and will be fingerprinted. (See fingerprint section, below.) Coaches must agree to follow the Diocesan Safe Environment "Code of Conduct Involving Interaction with Minors."

Diocesan Safe Environment Training

It is required that each coach complete diocesan safe environment training. These trainings are NOT included in the coaches' workshops. Instead, coaches need to complete the traning either "on line" or at a live workshop at their parish. Details are included on each workshop flyer posted here. Coaches will not be certified to coach until the safe environment requirement has been completed.

NEW CYO COACHES: ALL NEW CYO coaches, are required to complete the Safe Environment Training (SET) Course, to be completed after July 1, 2013.  All new coaches should bring their SET completion certificate to the workshop

RETURNING CYO COACHES: RETURNING CYO coaches (those certified for the 2012-2013 seasons), are not required to recomplete the Safe Environment Training (SET)  Course. Returning coaches should bring their 2012-2013 CYO Coaches Certification Card to the workshop.

Skills Clinics and Additional Training Resources for Coaches

Want to sharpen your Coaching Xs and Os?

Many of our local Catholic high schools and other organizations offer skills clinics for coaches.  We post information on individual sports pages under "Opportunities" sections.  Check the webpage in this site on your sport for information on offerings!

Interested in On-Line Training?

The following are on-line courses from the American Sports Education Program (ASEP).

(Note: None of these courses listed are CYO Certification courses.)

Fingerprinting for CYO Volunteers

The Oakland Diocese requires that adults working directly with children are fingerprinted.  This includes CYO Coaches and CYO Athletic Directors.

See the requirements on the middle of this page for details.

There will be fingerprinting opportunities for coaches this spring at the CYO Girls' Basketball and CYO Track Workshops.
