Condolences on death of Bishop David O'Connell

Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ offers the following condolences on the death of Bishop David O'Connell, who passed away Feb. 18, 2023:

“We in the Diocese of Oakland mourn the passing under violent circumstances of Bishop David. G. O’Connell, Auxiliary of Los Angeles.

"He was a pastor dedicated to the care of souls, especially those in inner city Los Angeles. He was a strong advocate for Catholic education as the best way out of a life of poverty, and encouraged the Catholic Campaign for Human Development to fund scholarships for Catholic schools. He lived a life of deep piety.

"We shall miss him, and we offer our prayers and condolences to Archbishop Gomez, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and the relatives of Bishop O’Connell. May he rest in peace.”
