Safe Environment Training

All those who minister (volunteers, employees, and clergy ) in the Diocese of Oakland are to be educated about the nature of child sexual abuse, how it is perpetrated, how to report it, and strategies for prevention. Training is mandatory for all who minister - first before starting work or volunteering and then every three years thereafter. If you are due to retrain, you will receive an email from Virtus to do so. 

Employees, clergy and any volunteers with direct, ongoing contact with minors must be live scan fingerprinted and cleared prior to ministry in the Diocese of Oakland.  

Steps Include:

1. Virtus Registration & Training
2. Finger-Printing & Background Check (Live Scan Paperwork download)
3. Sign the CYO Code of Conduct

1. Check your 'cleared' status by logging into Virtus
   • Includes verifying that you have:
     • completed Fingerprinting (for the Diocese of Oakland)
     • up to date on the Virtus training
     • signed the CYO Code of Conduct

Young people under 18 years of age, and in high school, are welcome to coach in CYO!  As minors, they are not allowed to be in charge of a team, but they are allowed to assist the adult coaches.

To be a CYO coach and be certified, the minor coach must meet the following requirements:

• Be in high school and of high school age.
• Be approved to coach by the parish/school CYO program and by the minor's parents or guardians.
• If a new coach, attend an online CYO Coaches Certification Workshop.
• Review and understand the Diocese of Oakland Code of Ethical Conduct for Minors Volunteering or Working with Young Children.
• The minor should NOT take a Virtus Training Course and should NOT be fingerprinted due to their age.
