DIocesan Campaign for Mercy Promoting merciful justice and hope for those in need among us

Introducing the Diocesan Campaign for Mercy A message from Bishop Barber

Oct. 15, 2025

Dear Brother Priests,

With the approval of the Presbyteral Council, I am pleased to introduce the Diocesan Campaign for Mercy (DCM), an initiative dedicated to promoting merciful justice and hope for those in need among us.  Following the Vatican II principle of subsidiarity, this diocesan campaign is the local successor to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.

We will begin the Campaign the weekend of Nov. 15-16, 2025. Resources for the promotion of the campaign will be made available to your parishes in the upcoming days.

This is a new opportunity for our faithful to support programs that directly address the root causes of poverty in the Diocese of Oakland and that are true to the teachings of the Catholic Church. Working closely with our parishes and organizations, the DCM provides grants for programs addressing the many challenges caused by poverty, including unexpected or fragile pregnancies, increased violence, pressures faced by immigrants and refugees, and limited access to food, housing, safe childcare, job training, transportation, and clean water and air.

Through this campaign, we put Catholic teaching into action, upholding the life and dignity of every human person and answering the Gospel command to care for “the least of these” (Matthew 25). Inspired by the Corporal Works of Mercy, which serve as a pillar for our Diocese, DCM seeks to tackle systemic injustices while supporting local programs that offer real hope and practical solutions to break the cycle of poverty.

Please consider forwarding this letter and the accompanying facts sheet to your staff, to encourage success for this inaugural campaign. We know the poor and vulnerable women and men of our diocese are depending upon us.

Thank you for your prayerful support and generosity as we work together to bring God’s mercy in a very tangible way to the people of Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

Yours sincerely in Christ,

The Most Rev. Michael C. Barber, S.J
Bishop of Oakland
