Diocesan Newspapers, Writers, Photographer Receive Awards

Voice LogoThe Catholic Voice and El Heraldo Católico (the Spanish-language newspaper of our diocese) were recently recognized by the Catholic Press Association for excellence in journalism.

Jose Aguirre, Staff Writer and Photographer, received a first place award in “Best News Writing - Local/Regional Event” (Spanish) for an article on Jesus Navarro, a local immigrant awaiting an organ transplant.  Michele Jurich, Associate Editor and Staff Writer, earned a first place award in the category “Best Reporting on Special Age Group” (young adults) for her story on Andrew Moore, the college student from Concord who lost his life while walking across America to raise awareness of pro-life issues last fall.

Aguirre also received second place in “Best Photo Story Originating with a Newspaper” for his article on the ordination of Rev. Derrick Oliveira, and second place in “Best Coverage of Vocations” for an article on a day in the life of our seminarians.  Additionally, Diana Otero received honorable mention in the “Best Coverage of Immigration” category for her story on the effect of changes in immigration rules on young people.

Congratulations to Jose Aguirre, Michele Jurich and Diana Otero, editors Albert Pacciorini and Marina Hinestrosa, and designers Steve German and Dexter Valencia for these well-deserved honors!

The Catholic Voice is mailed to all registered households in the diocese and is also available online at CatholicVoiceoOakland.org.
