"Yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.” (Acts 2:11)
Masses are celebrated regularly in more than a dozen languages in the Oakland Diocese, including Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Kmhmu, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and Tagalog. The Ethnic Pastoral and Cultural Centers are an extension of the pastoral role of the office of the Bishop to these communities. We recognize and nurture the strong bond between culture and faith, and desire to promote understanding, awareness and a deep appreciation for the rich cultural diversity among our congregations.
Chautauqua 2025
Chautauqua, the “gathering of peoples” and a celebration of the rich ethnic and cultural diversity within the Diocese of Oakland, returned to the Cathedral of Christ the Light on Sept. 20. The celebration included a parade of nation’s, Mass, Marian devotion, a sampling of ethnic cuisine and cultural entertainment (Photos by Justin Cardona).
Chautauqua is planned by the Ethnic Pastoral Centers, part of Faith Formation and Evangelization, another ministry supported by generous donations to the Bishop’s Ministries Appeal (BMA).
