Parishes in Action

Parishes in Action (PIA) offers opportunities of encounter, formation, direct service and advocacy to assist the church of the Diocese of Oakland in its response to Christ’s call to be the Church on the Streets. We aim to serve the marginalized and build relationships with the whole church community.

What is the Parish Solidarity Initiative?

Parish Solidarity Initiative was inspired by Pope Francis and the renewed and deep desire of Catholics across the United States for new ways to live their faith, encounter and respond to those excluded and suffering around the world. In our Diocese of Oakland, this initiative aligns with two of Bishop Michael Barber’s goals: 1) To continue the spirit of the Year of Mercy by emphasizing the importance of the corporal and spiritual works of mercy; 2) To form our people as missionary disciples.

Support for Parish Solidarity Teams:

Receive special formation rooted in the Catholic Social Teaching. Provide an experience of encountering with God as a foundation for caring for those in need. Parish Solidarity Teams will also receive hands on training in skills for effective parish engagement. These skills include:

  • Building teams
  • Identifying and engaging leaders and participants
  • Facilitating meetings
  • Becoming mentors
  • Using faith-sharing resources
