CRS Response to Hurricane Matthew Striking Haiti

On October 4, Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti bringing 145 mile per hour winds, storm surges and up to 40 inches of rainfall. The category 4 storm has caused massive devastation and flooding in Haiti, which is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and which has yet to fully recover from a catastrophic earthquake in 2010.

With communications still cut in many areas, and bridges and roads destroyed, preventing access to the hardest hit communities, the full extent of the damage is just now emerging. Tragically, as of last Friday, the death toll had already surpassed 800 people, and is continuing to rise. The southern part of the country was hardest hit with up to 90 percent of houses in Jeremie, a provincial capital in the south, having been destroyed or seriously damaged, and agricultural fields having been decimated.

Catholic Relief Services has made an initial commitment of $5 million to provide the most vulnerable with critical supplies, like food, water and shelter.

View the report on the CRS emergency response to the hurricane. For more information, please go to the special CRS webpage at crs.org. It contains stories about the survivors and the latest news on CRS’ response to the disaster, and provides a way to make a financial contribution. (Para información en Español hacer clic aquí.)

In addition, the agency has put together a number of resources to help parish communities and individuals respond to the disaster. These include a special prayer for victims of Hurricane Matthew abd liturgical prayers in both English and Spanish. To view these resources, please go to http://www.crs.org/resource-center/church-responds-hurricane-matthew.

As with previous reports, please help us get this information to parishioners through sharing it in the form of a bulletin insert or bulletin announcements. For questions or further information, please contact Marc McKimmey, CRS Diocesan Coordinator.
