On Feb. 13, 2020, Bishop Michael Barber placed Father George Alengadan on administrative leave, due to allegations of inappropriate behavior with an adult woman.
Under the terms of this canonical decree, Father Alengadan is not able to present himself in public as a priest, which includes he cannot celebrate a public Mass or other sacraments, until the investigation is completed, and a report provided to Bishop Barber.
This is the second investigation regarding Father Alengadan’s behavior in the past 12 months. In 2019, a trained, independent investigator reviewed allegations that Father Alengadan had engaged in inappropriate conduct of a sexual nature with current and former female employees of the Diocese. The investigator made a factual determination the conduct alleged by these women was substantiated; however, the investigator made no determination whether this conduct constituted sexual harassment or a violation of any law.
Anyone who has factual information relevant to allegations of inappropriate conduct concerning Father Alengadan should contact your local civil authority, i.e. police or sheriff department, and the chancellor for the Diocese of Oakland, Mr. Stephen Wilcox,
