Excitement in playing girls’ CYO Volleyball was the common thread for the awardees this year, as the CYO Scholarship Committee awarded three annual scholarships from a group of fifty applications received from eighth graders in all CYO sports.
The scholarships were awarded to
Alexandria Arcibal from St. Felicitas CYO, San Leandro;
Sarai Espinoza from St. Elizabeth CYO, Oakland; and
Emmy Abar from Holy Spirit CYO, Fremont.

The 2024 Spring Girls' CYO Basketball season ended with playofffs in May. The playoffs saw close games with crowds packing the gyms as thrity-eight teams, 4th through 8th grades, played in the four day tournament, held at Moreau Catholic High School, Hayward, St Joseph Notre Dame, Alameda, and St. Leander, San Leandro. The CYO Scholarship Committee is now inviting applications for the 2024 Bill Ford CYO Scholarships. Three $1000. scholarships will be awarded to 8th grade CYO players who participated during the 2023-2024 school-year seasons. The scholarships are annually funded by a foundation. Over 750 excited runners ran at Crown Beach Regional Park, Alameda, to begin the 2023 CYO Cross Country Season. The races marked the beginning of a five week season. For more details, click the link above.
The CYO Spring Sports – Track & Field, Girls' Basketball (West Diocese) and Boys' Sand Volleyball have ended with a postseason meet, playoff and tournament. Over 500 runners competed in the Diocesan Track and Field Championship Meet, 35 Girls' CYO Basketball teams (in the western half of the diocese) played in Girls' CYO Basketball Playoffs, and 16 Boys' CYO Sand Volleyball teams played in the annual CYO Sand Volleyball Tournament. Sister Denise Bourdet PBVM is celebrating her 70th anniversary of profession with the Sisters of the Presentation. Before her retirement, Sister was well-known and instrumental in CYO in the Oakland Diocese for over 50 years, and as a teacher at St .Joseph the Worker School, Berkeley. The CYO basketball and volleyball seasons will begin soon and coaches are preparing to coach through CYO Certification. All CYO Coaches must be certified to coach young people through CYO Coaches Certification. New coaches attend one of five Certification Workshops, hosted by the Oakland Diocese CYO. The five week CYO Cross Country season concluded with the Oakland Diocese Championship Meet featuring over 800 runners from 32 parishes and Catholic schools participating. Girls' CYO Basketball season for the western half of the diocese concluded with the first basketball playoffs in two years. All grades in two participating leagues finished the season with leading teams in the 6th, 7th and 8th grades meeting for a 10 team weekend playoff. For details, click the link above

The Salesian basketball team and Coach Steve Pezzola will again host the Red and Black Basketball Skills Development Clinic for girls in the 4th through 8th grade.
