On March 25, approximately 500 Catholics converged on the California Capitol to meet with their representatives. The group included 15 people from the Oakland Diocese, led by Kiona Medina, diocesan social justice coordinator; Karen Flores, diocesan coordinator for marriage and family; and Deacon Peter Nixon. The group met with Senator Jess Arreguin, Assemblywoman Liz Ortega, and staff representatives.
“We advocated for the needs of immigrants, houseless pregnant women, money allocation to food banks and children’s right to privacy and protection from artificial intelligence,” explained Medina. These issues are on the docket this session in AB 1880, AB 2379 and AB 2291. Organized by the California Catholic Conference, the day also included Mass with eight of the bishops of California and a procession.
