New bishop of San Jose welcomed

OAKLAND – Bishop Michael C. Barber, SJ, congratulates Bishop Oscar Cantú, who has been appointed as Coadjutor Bishop of San Jose. The appointment was announced today by Archbishop Christophe Pierre, apostolic nuncio to the United States. Bishop Barber’s statement follows:

 “On behalf of the whole Diocese of Oakland, I congratulate Bishop Cantú on his appointment as coadjutor of the San Jose Diocese.  I welcome his presence and advice in the fraternity of the bishops of the Province of San Francisco. His dedication to the Church, exemplified by his service on several USCCB committees, is a great witness and testimony to all.”

 The Diocese of Oakland serves two counties in the East Bay region, Alameda and Contra Costa, and includes approximately 400,000 Catholics in 84 parishes.
