Interim Superintendent Announced

Father Larry Young announced as interim superintendent of Oakland Diocese schools

May 13, 2016

Father Larry Young, currently pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Rodeo, has been announced as interim superintendent of the Oakland Diocese’s school system.

Father Young, 75, first came to the Oakland Diocese to teach at Moreau High School in Hayward. He also served as dean of students and principal before being ordained as a priest in 1981. He has worked in the Oakland Diocese ever since, including at Holy Spirit in Fremont and Good Shepherd in Pittsburg.

“Father Young’s service as interim superintendent will allow us to move forward decisively with our vision to transform our schools as centers of faith and knowledge,” Bishop Barber said in making the announcement.

The Diocese of Oakland is conducting a national search for a permanent superintendent. That committee is headed by Father George Mockel, Vicar General for the diocese.

The Diocese of Oakland serves two counties in the East Bay region, Alameda and Contra Costa, and has nine high schools and 44 elementary and middle schools.
